Slot Machine History
The slot machine's history dates back to the late 1800's in San Francisco, California, when a car mechanic named Charles Fey invented the first commercially successful slot machine. He teamed up with the Mills Novelty Company and manufactured the Mills Liberty Bell, which enjoyed wide success.
The modern slot machines of today are quite different from Fey's original concept and the Liberty Bell slot machine, but they maintain a few features that were present in the original machines, such as a bell (or similar sound) ringing when the jackpot is hit.
The Liberty Bell quickly spawned many more similarly-made slots machines in different areas of the United States and beyond. The slot machine enjoyed varied success in different states and jurisdictions.
With the advent of Las Vegas and other gambling paradises, slot machines were initially not well accepted, as card games and the roulette were the name of the game. The casino magnates introduced slot machines as a way to entertain and keep busy the wives and girlfriends of the rich gamblers so that they would spend more time on the poker tables.
The casino owners quickly realized that the slot machines were not only worthy casino games, but actually returned a higher revenue ratio than the other games, particularly since the rich players were getting more skilled at games such as poker and blackjack. So they started promoting the slot machines as one of the main games featured at their casinos.
Eventually, and partially thanks to Hollywood, slot machines grew into becoming the most popular gambling game ever created. Slot machines are played on a daily basis by millions of people from all creeds and colors from all around world, in pubs and at home.
A large percentage of slots players prefer to play them at online casinos from the comfort of their home. An online casino will allow you to play slots and many other casino games while sitting comfortably in your desktop chair.
